Help - My first project. Control Charts showing negative limits
by Bryanjsmith on 18th January 2009Hello,
I’m after some advice. I’m trying to introduce control charts around my Companies core processes ( Public Sector). I’m green belt trained and currently have a opportunity to sell the Six Sigma principles, so I need to ensure my data and measurement is spot on.
I am measuring cycle time at present (Query Resolution), my sample is the correct size according the population, but is not normally distributed. The data skews to the left.
My Control Chart lower limit is negative in value, so how can the cycle time be negative hours ?
I Apologise if this is simple, but I want to get this right in order to capitalise on this window I have of management buy in.

Answer to the question
Hello,
When your LCL (Lower Control Limit) is a negative value, you must adopt as a LCL the value 0.
I send you a spanish link where appears an example (Excel example)
http://www.cyta.com.ar/biblioteca/bddoc/bdlibros/calidad_excel/calidad_excel.htm
Limite Inferior de Control (LCL)
LIC= =B18-(3*(B18*(1-B12))^(1/2)) => LIC= -1,828122737
Como el límite inferior de control no puede ser un número negativo, se asume como LIC el menor valor posible, por tanto (
LIC = 0.
I translate to you " As LCL can´t be a negative value, we adopt as LCL the minimum value that is possible, LCC=0)
Best Regards,
Andrés.
