The Context for Change
The next Community Network Meeting will address how continuous improvement programmes should be positioned in the organisations structure in order to have most effect.
The theme will be to define ‘The Context for Change’.
Any Continuous Improvement / Operational Excellence team cannot waste a second working on anything that is not fully aligned to the business strategy and operational targets yet it is often felt that continuous improvement (CI) programmes and other initiatives for change are working in a vacuum.
The part they do and can play in the achievement of overall business strategy is not always fully articulated and / or understood by either business leaders or the mass of the workforce.
It has been suggested that CI teams can be ‘safely ignored’ either because they are not understood or are not working on fundamental benefits or factors affecting the business achieving its strategic goals.
Programmes can and do deliver real benefits but are perhaps perceived as more of a ‘tactical’ and project based tool than being a required part of achieving the Business Process Model.
If CI and Operational Excellence (OPEX) functions are to endure then they must deliver long term strategic benefit through facilitation of sustainable change in leadership behaviour and be essential to delivery of the organisations critical success factors.
The ultimate goal must be ‘business as usual’ rather than projects being done to or with people.
The purpose of this meeting will be to explore how CI programmes are perceived and why, with the goal of changing the way we are set up and operate in order to be most effective for the organisation.
How do we have to be different in order to become a business imperative and an essential feature of the organisational structure?
As a consequence of this meeting, there will be many tasks to be performed and these will be addressed in a separate forum(s). This meeting will set down the areas to be addressed but will not have the time to deliver detailed plans.
The principle actionable insight to be delivered will address what we can do in our
positioning, performance and structure in order to become more essential to the delivery of the business strategy.
