25th – 26th OCTOBER 2010 ALDERLEY PARK, CHESHIRE, UK
SYNOPSIS
AstraZeneca is hosting a two-day collaboration event where attendees will gain insight and share experience and knowledge in a confidential, facilitated environment free from sales pitches.
Attendees will learn:
• from large complex organisations who have harnessed creativity whilst improving efficiency and effectiveness of their R&D departments
• how to reduce the uncertainty of managing ideas through the product lifecycle
• how to effectively capture and use ideas from within your own organisation
• how a real culture of innovation has been generated in disparate industries
• how potentially conflicting tensions can be aligned to create a powerful driver for both improvement and innovation
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This event will bring together senior leaders with a track record in leading innovation to participate in discussions and share knowledge around delivering more from R&D investment. Attendees will include leaders with a background in science, technology and engineering responsible for fostering innovation in businesses.
Attendance is by invitation only. Details of how to request an invitation are included at the end of this brochure.
WHAT DO WE WANT TO LEARN?
The need to be significantly better at delivering value from R&D investment is imperative for all organisations with business models delivering innovative products and services. There are many similarities in the challenges faced across different industries. These include the uncertainty of outcomes due to technical limitations and the demands of meeting rapidly evolving customer needs.
At the heart of the challenge for leaders within large organisations is the management of seemingly conflicting demands: for example, harnessing creativity whilst achieving operational excellence and focusing on key targets whilst being opportunistic. Fostering an effective innovation culture depends on synthesizing these seemingly conflicting demands; building this understanding will be at the heart of our debate.
i&i is working on behalf of AstraZeneca in organising this two-day event. i&i is bringing together leaders and experts from a variety of industries to learn and share best practice in dealing with these challenges. This is an opportunity to inspire and learn, to extend your own peer group and to share knowledge that will add practical ideas to enhance your innovation strategies.

KEY THEMES FOR LEARNING
Customer Insight & Value: how to hard wire customersʼ latent / emergent needs into innovation activities.
Uncertainty Management: the organisational capabilities required to make good decisions with long lead times & high uncertainty propositions.
Lifecycle of Ideas: setting a business case for ideas (ʻoptions incubationʼ), selecting projects to progress on individual merits & portfolio contribution.
Leadership & Culture: finding the right balance between focus & opportunism; innovation & operational excellence; creative chaos & disciplined execution.
Alliances, Partnerships and Open Innovation: making full use of external & non traditional partnerships to promote innovative programmes.
DAY ONE
The aim of the first day of the meeting is to bring together a variety of organisations to learn from case studies and lessons learned concepts, principles and approaches that have worked to
foster efficient creative environments. A set of topics has been defined to help focus discussions.
DAY TWO
The second day will focus on discussing how to implement the lessons learned during the first day’s sessions. There will also be a tour of the AstraZeneca R&D facility for interested parties. In the tour external guests will be given an insight into the practice and challenges of Pharmaceutical R&D. Participants will gain fascinating insights into the practice, technologies and challenges of pharmaceutical science, and be walked through a key part of the value-chain to learn improvements made to design and
knowledge creation processes.
