Catalyst’s Approach to Lean Six Sigma
At Catalyst, we feel there is real synergy between Lean Thinking and Six Sigma. It is not a question of one or the other; both are needed. They combine to provide an extremely effective and pragmatic approach to improvement.
That said, for the approach to be successful, it’s vital to recognise the need for different thinking. This quote from Albert Einstein sums things up very well:
“The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that caused them.”
We want to change outcomes, but we need to realise that they are themselves the outcomes from our systems. Not the computer systems, but the way we work together and interact. These systems are the product of how we think and behave. So, if we want to change the outcomes, we have to change our systems, and to do that, we have to change our thinking, and our behaviours. Those changes need to begin with the organisation’s leadership and management.
The thinking needs to focus on improving value for the customer, by improving and smoothing the process flow, eliminating waste and reducing variation.
This is reflected in the set of key principles for Lean Six Sigma that we refer to as the magnificent seven:
- Focus on the customer
- Identify and understand how the work gets done – the value
- stream
- Manage, improve, and smooth the process flow
- Remove Non-Value-Add steps and waste
- Manage by fact and reduce variation
- Involve and equip the people in the process
- Undertake improvement activity in a systematic way
Catalyst provides a comprehensive range of highly interactive in-house and open training programmes. We have our own standard training packages, but we are always happy to work with clients to develop or tailor programmes and workshops to meet specific needs.
